About Metal Slug 1st Mission
Metal Slug: 1st Mission is an Action game, developed by Ukiyotei and published by SNK, which was released in Japan in 1999. As a member of the elite forces squad "Peregrine Falcons," your mission is to eliminate the evil Colonel Bildegaarn. Using the Metal Slug multifunction tank and the Slug Flyer as well as your wits and handgun blast through up to 17 missions in your quest to make the world safe from tyranny. Multiple stage progressions and a gameplay ranking system give reason to play through more than once. In-game save lets the player on the go turn off the Neo Geo Pocket and not lose progress.

The first and rougher of the pair, and the cheapest way into the series on this console.
1st Mission is the prototype for what 2nd Mission got right: an original Metal Slug built for a handheld, with branching routes and a pace that suits short sessions. It is a little stiffer and a little less confident than its sequel, but it is a genuine Metal Slug game and it is one of the more affordable English cartridges on the platform.
IGDB and collector databases list several late Japanese variants of this title — Version A through D and a Best Collection reprint — which are budget re-issues rather than different games. It is on NEOGEO POCKET COLOR SELECTION Vol. 1 for the Nintendo Switch.
Before you buy
Cheaper than the marquee titles, but the Metal Slug name still attracts fakes. If you are buying a Japanese copy, check whether it is a Best Collection reprint — those are later budget editions, worth less than a first print, and sellers do not always distinguish them.
