About Meteorites
Meteorites is an arcade action game featuring gameplay similar to Asteroids. You control a spaceship surrounded by numerous asteroids; your goal is to destroy them! Each time you shoot an asteroid, it will break up into smaller asteroids. Eventually the pieces will be small enough that you can destroy them. When you have destroyed all of the asteroids, you will move on to the next, more difficult level. Meteorites was originally called Disasteroids, but the name was changed under pressure from Atari.

An Asteroids-style cartridge from a joystick maker, well regarded at release and now one of the hard finds in the library.
Meteorites is an Asteroids clone for the 5200 by Electra Concepts, a company better known for joysticks such as the Triga Command and the Masterplay interface that lets 5200 owners use 2600-style sticks. Electronic Games, in October 1984, called it a first-class version for the SuperSystem and very faithful to the coin-op in spirit and in play action. Its reviewer noted that home players had otherwise had only the VCS Asteroids, which he thought uninspired.
Computer Entertainer's review in issue 3-3 was cooler on the looks: the graphics are sparse, though the bumpy meteorites are well detailed, and the play is just like Asteroids, including hyperspace. Electra's own ads claimed it bypasses the 5200's sprite hardware to put up to 60 independent moving objects on screen.
How it was made
Developed and published by Electra Concepts in 1984, the same company that made the Masterplay 5200 interface.
What the press said at the time
| Computer Entertainer Vol. 3 No. 3 | June 1984 | Graphics ★★ · Play-Action ★★½ |
“game play, except that it’s just like Asteroids. If that arcade … is among your favorites, you'll like METEORITES.”
“All in all. Meteorites is a tough. 24- level game with enough in every department to satisfy even the most diehard pulverizer, atomizer or smasher of outer space gravel.”
Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — stars in most years, diamonds in 1986–87 — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.
How the Atari 5200 version differs
Computer Entertainer said the 5200 cartridge has rather sparse-looking graphics with good detail in the bumpy meteorites.
Before you buy
AtariAge rates it Very Rare+, which is why it is a value risk. The research found no documented fake, but it flags the title as medium risk on rarity alone. A Sega-style shell with a front-only label (orange title on white) is normal for this cart, so do not treat that shell as a red flag. Ask for clear photos of the label and confirm the cartridge boots. The designers recommended a digital joystick with the Masterplay interface; Computer Entertainer found the Wico analog stick in self-centering mode also works well, so budget for a better controller if the stock stick bothers you.
