A European-only Mega Drive refresh of Micro Machines 2, fun with friends and priced below the middle of its group.

Micro Machines: Turbo Tournament '96 was developed by Supersonic Software and published by Codemasters in Europe on 20 October 1995. It is an update of Micro Machines 2: Turbo Tournament on the Mega Drive, with a track editor, new race tracks and a new soundtrack. Some reviewers felt it was too similar to the game it updated.

Computer and Video Games, reviewing the Mega Drive game in December 1995, called it pretty much a 3D version of Micro Machines with good fun and loads of clever features and play modes. It felt that the bumpy tracks and awkward view made it less smooth than Micro Machines 2, and it singled out the J-Cart multiplayer option as loads of fun.

What the press said at the time

GamePro Issue 6February 199692%

“Anyone who's not got Micro Machines should make this their most important buy of the year. Fans of the previous Micro Machines games should already have their copies on order.”

— GamePro, November 1995

“How do you improve upon one of the world’s best racing games? Codemasters has found a way to do it”

— GamePro, February 1996

This is a European cart; it came out only in Europe. Among European-only carts it sits below the middle. Sega Retro lists a J-Cart variant of it.
