One of the best-regarded 7800 games, a big Halloween adventure that came out so late that few people bought it.

Radioactive Software built Midnight Mutants for Atari Corporation, and it arrived in the final wave of 1991. Peter Adams designed and programmed it, Les Pardew did the art, and Paul Webb the music. Al Lewis's likeness appears as Grampa, who gives advice as you explore a large map of locations, fight bosses and watch your blood supply drop.

Atari Explorer's 1991 review loved the graphics, color and sound, and joked that it might do for the 7800 what Night of the Living Dead did for the silver screen. Later writers agree. IGN placed it third among 7800 games, and Retro Gamer said its late arrival made it one of the most advanced games on the system. Atari 7800 Forever praised its humor, easy menus and boss fights. A hidden message in the code jokes that it is a wonder Peter ever got the program debugged.

What the press said at the time

“The graphics in this game are exceptionally good. Color, imagery, and sound effects heighten its intensity. Though fine for solo play, Midnight Mutants might be just the thing to set the mood for a Fright Night party”

— Atari Explorer, September 1991

Atari Explorer was Atari Corp.'s own magazine, so its reviews are of the company's own games.

How the Atari 7800 version differs

Retro Gamer said the game's late release is why it is one of the most advanced on the 7800, able to rival its console contemporaries.

Before you buy

This is among the pricier 7800 games, and AtariAge rates the color-label cart scarce, so expect real money for a loose copy. The catalog number is CX 7889. Pro-Line joystick, one player. The box and manual carry much of a complete copy's value.
