An Accolade football game with big sprites that is among the cheapest US carts.
Mike Ditka Power Football was developed by Accolade and released under its Ballistic label, in Europe on 23 October 1991 and in North America in December 1991. A preview in Video Games and Computer Entertainment highlighted large bit-mapped players and an animated referee voiced by NFL veteran official Jim Tunney, and noted that the presentation recalled John Madden Football.
What the press said at the time
| MegaTech Issue 1 | December 1991 | MEGATECH RATING: 72% |
| Sega Force Issue 13 | January 1993 | Playability 40%, Realism 30% |
| Mean Machines Sega Issue 3 | December 1992 | 72% |
“On the one hand there are some superb intro screens detailing Mike Ditka in various poses, but conversely the players on the pitch are very bločky with dodgy animation.”
“Accolade's attempt at a footy game isn't a bad one, but it simply doesn't match up to the competition. There are plenty of digitised sound effects and a neat menu system, but the gameplay is too limited and simplistic to make it a worthwhile purchase.”
“It was terrible! Where do I start? It’s just so unrealistic it’s untrue. I don’t know what to say, it was so poor.”
“A cross between Joe Montana Football and John Madden's Football, but not as good as either.”
Worth knowing
- Accolade and Sega. Next Generation's 1999 account of Accolade's dispute with Sega says the code that satisfied the Genesis trademark security check was added to Star Control, Hardball, Turican and Mike Ditka Power Football before Accolade released them.
Before you buy
Among US carts this is one of the cheapest, so condition and completeness matter more than region. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
