About Motocross
Motocross is a bike racing game for one player against the clock, one player against the computer, or two players. Included are three different racetracks of varying lengths, each with many twists, turns, and even some jumps. Be careful when racing, or you could skid off the track on a sharp turn or crash after a poorly timed jump! You can also use the track editor to create your own track to race on. For each race, you can choose anywhere from one to ten laps to be completed.

A top-down dirt-bike racer with unusually flexible options, now priced like a late-era rarity.
Mattel released Motocross in 1983. Computer Entertainer described a game with plenty of settings: you choose the number of laps, easy or rough terrain, S-turns and jumps, race against the clock, and even run the course in reverse. You can pick a built-in course or build your own, and the top button accelerates while the lower buttons brake.
It came out near the end of Mattel's run, and its sealed price is far above its loose price.
How it was made
Developed and published by Mattel Electronics, released in October 1983.
What the press said at the time
| Computer Entertainer Vol. 2 No. 8 | November 1983 | Graphics ★★★ · Play-Action ★★★ |
“Otherwise, the game is a good one, and gives a nice perspective to dirt racing and its obstacles.”
Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.
Worth knowing
- From the Intellivision manual. Choose Course 4 to design your own race course piece by piece; play it again later from the Last Designed Course option.
- From the Intellivision manual. You can race alone against the clock, against a second player or against the computer, or just watch one or two computer bikes as a spectator.
Before you buy
Came with two keypad overlays. Sealed copies sell for far more than loose carts, so a sealed purchase is largely a packaging purchase. Test the brake and accelerate buttons before paying a premium.
