Mattel's ECS educational cartridge, a niche item that mostly matters to people who own the keyboard component.
Mr. Basic Meets Bits 'N Bytes is an educational cartridge in Mattel's 1983 ECS group. It runs without the ECS Computer Module, with limited features, though it is meant to be used with it.
It is the odd one out among the ECS software, and a collector's item more than a game.
How it was made
Mattel Electronics developed and published it in 1983.
Worth knowing
- From the Intellivision manual. Every game can be played with the hand controllers alone, the Computer Keyboard alone, or both together by typing simple BASIC instructions.
- From the Intellivision manual. The cartridge menu offers three games (Vampire Bats, Cannon and Mr. BASIC) and doubles as an introduction to Intellivision BASIC programming.
- From the Intellivision manual. In Vampire Bats you control an exterminator on a barn roof, dropping bombs on bats; a game keeps three exterminators.
Before you buy
Mattel packed six keypad overlays with this one, covering three programs, and all six must be present for a complete copy. Without the ECS Computer Adapter you get limited features. The box and manual carry much of a complete copy's value.
