A Formula 1 racer that Sega Pro's German edition panned, and one of the cheaper US carts.
This is the Genesis version of the game that Japan knew as Nakajima Satoru Kanshū F-1 Hero MD, endorsed by Formula One driver Satoru Nakajima. North America and Europe got it as Ferrari Grand Prix Challenge, published by Flying Edge, with Aisystem Tokyo as the developer. The Japanese Mega Drive release came first, on 15 May 1992, followed by Europe in September 1992. The Genesis game offers a Grand Prix mode, a free practice mode and a time attack mode, and it is one of three Mega Drive games to support the AX-1E analog controller.
Sega Pro's German edition was harsh, calling it possibly the worst racing game on the market for its dull graphics, jerky scrolling and monotonous sound.
What the press said at the time
| Mean Machines Sega Issue 1 | October 1992 | 44% |
| Mean Machines Sega Issue 3 | December 1992 | 45% |
“With the likes of Super Monaco GP Il out now, there's no excuse to buy this lame, stunted effort.”
“Alin Well presented, with some skillful option, Ferrari is unfortunately marred by the fact that the actual game is extremely sad. The 3D update is awful and the gameplay terminally dull. Don't buy this.”
“Why is it that so many crap racing games start with the letter F?”
Before you buy
Among US carts it sits below the middle. The European loose cart usually costs a little less than the US one, while a complete European copy usually costs about the same. The Japanese cart (F-1 Hero MD) usually costs more loose but a complete one costs less, and it has a different cartridge shape. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
