A launch title with a Vietnam setting and a boot-screen quirk, and one of the more affordable ways into an original AES library.

NAM-1975 was among the first games developed for the Neo Geo and one of its launch titles, a pack-in on the MVS. SNK set it in the final months of the Vietnam War and has two American soldiers, Silver and Brown, return to the country. It is the only Neo Geo title that skips the Neo Geo boot screen in its attract mode.

The AES was at first available only to rent or buy before retail sale began on July 1, 1991 in Japan. SNK's 1991 advertising for the console pointed to the game's recorded screams of war-torn veterans as a showcase for the system's speech channels. A Neo Geo CD version arrived in September 1994.

How it was made

Developed and published by SNK; one of the first games, if not the first, developed for the Neo Geo platform.

What the press said at the time

“Sound and graphics wise Nam 1975 is superior to any similar game on any other console, but the Neo-Geo is capable of better things.”

— The Games Machine, August 1990

“Nam ties in an intense story along with crisp, detailed graphics, explosive sound effects and perfect challenge to bring you an awesome game. If you don't have it, find it.”

— GameFan, April 1993

Before you buy

Sold in both Japan and the US, and the two carts are similar in price. A sealed copy is documented but sells for a clear premium over a complete one, and at that point you are paying for packaging, so verify it in person. Conversion risk is moderate for a cart at this level: ask for board photos and look for NEO-AEG markings. A complete copy has the hard plastic case, artwork and manual. The arcade version is cheaply playable on modern consoles through ACA NeoGeo.
