About NASL Soccer

NASL Soccer is an action soccer game for two players. The game follows typical soccer rules; attempt to score more goals than your opponent in the two 45 minute periods (this is in simulated time). You control one player on your team at a time while the computer takes control of the rest. The game allows you to dribble and pass, and features throw ins, corner kicks, goal kicks, and in the event of a tie the game goes in to overtime! Several skill levels are available which control the speed of the game.

First release on each platform, from IGDB’s records of this game’s ports and editions. Remakes are separate games with their own pages, so they are not listed here.

We haven’t priced or authenticated the versions without a section on this page yet.

Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Intellivision version

Mattel's original Intellivision soccer cart, a decent two-player game that is cheap and needs a human opponent.

NASL Soccer is the Intellivision original, based on the North American Soccer League and developed for Mattel by APh Technological Consulting. There is no computer opponent, so a solo buyer gets nothing out of it.

Electronic Games singled out the scrolling playfield in late 1982. Only three players per side appear on screen at once, but the field scrolls, so you can boot the ball to a teammate you cannot see and build real plays. That is the cart's main appeal against the flat single-screen sports games of the time.

What the press said at the time

“The three-quarters view of the field— as opposed to the more common overhead perspective— makes the game both visually more realistic and a lot more fun to play.”

— Electronic Games, December 1981

Worth knowing

  • From the Intellivision manual. The manual is titled simply Soccer; four game speeds are offered, with Rookie, Collegiate and Semi-Pro on the overlay keys and the fastest Pro speed on the disc.
  • From the Intellivision manual. A kick only happens if you hold the direction disc while pressing Shoot or Pass; Pass is slower and accurate, Shoot is faster and scores.
  • From the Intellivision manual. A game is two 45-minute simulated periods; a tie goes to Sudden Death overtime, and there are no penalties.

Before you buy

Two players are required. Mattel packed two keypad overlays with it. Sears sold the same game in its own box under the plain title Soccer, and that copy is priced above the Mattel one. The box and manual carry much of a complete copy's value.
