NHL Hockey on Wikipedia

NHL Hockey is an ice hockey video game developed by Park Place Productions and published by Electronic Arts. Released in the summer of 1991 exclusively for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, the game allows one to two players to play action-oriented hockey matches that include events such as fighting, power plays, and penalties. Officially licensed by the National Hockey League, NHL Hockey features the teams from the 1990–91 NHL season. It was released in Europe as EA Hockey and in Japan as Professional Hockey, with country-based teams due to the lack of a worldwide league license.

A landmark early hockey game that is cramped and two-player only; buy it for the history and a friend.

NHL Hockey puts three skaters and a goalie on each side in an angled side view. A 1991 Video Games and Computer Entertainment retrospective described it as the first electronic hockey simulation drawn in that perspective. A 1992 look back from the same magazine called it something of a disappointment: with no scrolling, the action is compressed onto one screen, and it has no solitaire version. It added that people seemed to like it anyway.

That missing solo mode is the point to know before buying. The game is also known as Hockey, and INTV Corporation later made Slap Shot, which does have a computer opponent.

What the press said at the time

“Add a simple-to-use passing and shooting system, appealing visuals and appropriate sounds, and the result is a hockey buffs delight.”

— VIDEO (Arcade Alley), February 1981

“The computer controls the goalies, and it does an excellent job. The netminders will stop almost any simple shot except for a point-blank slapper.”

— Electronic Games, December 1981

Before you buy

Two players are required, so you need a second person and both controllers. Mattel's copies came with two keypad overlays. Copies sold as Hockey and the Sears Tele-Games release are listed as separate versions, and the Hockey-titled copies sell for noticeably more than the standard NHL Hockey box. For solo play, look at INTV's Slap Shot instead.
