A fast Ninja Gaiden built for the Master System, with new moves and one of the pricier European-only carts.

SIMS developed this Ninja Gaiden for Sega under license from Tecmo, and it came out in Europe on July 16, 1992 under the Ninja Gaiden name. Ryu Hayabusa stars, but the plot is not connected to the other games in the series, and it swaps some NES abilities for a new wall-to-wall jump.

Mean Machines Sega called it an excellent four-way scrolling slash 'em up with super-speedy play, perhaps a tad easy. One reviewer said it is to the Master System what The Revenge of Shinobi is to the Mega Drive.

“Ninja Gaiden has loads of appeal. The graphics are excellent (sometimes rivalling Megadrive visuals, believe it or not) and the scrolling is super-smooth.”

— Mean Machines, September 1992

“An excellent four-way scrolling slash 'em up, Ninja Gaiden scores highly with its super-speedy game¬ play and smoothness. A tad easy maybe, but Ninja Gaiden is just so good to play you'll still be coming back for more months later.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“Mat promised Ninja Gaiden was ‘a thousand times better than the small screen version’. Loads of levels, tough villains and a satisfying challenge, who could ask for more? Another Smash at 90%.”

— Sega Force, February 1993

“Ryu Hayabusa! That's you (that is) as you jump pits, climb trees, leap from girder to girder and dodge the odd throwing star or three. A great challenge and with controls, graphics and effects this good, you're sure to want to take it up.”

— Sega Master Force, October 1993

Before you buy

Only the European cart exists. It is one of the pricier European-only carts, though the look-alike risk is low. A US buyer can use it, since the US console plays European carts.
