About Ninja Golf

Ninja Golf is an Atari 7800 video game which combines scrolling beat 'em up with golf simulation gameplay. Released in 1990, it later gained some renown for its outlandish subject matter and unique blend of gameplay styles. The player starts each hole by aiming his ball and shooting it toward the green. He then runs toward the ball, in traditional sidescroller fashion, fighting various enemies encountered along the way. These enemies include other ninjas, gophers, birds, giant mutant frogs, sharks and more. The enemies faced depend on the environment the ninja golfer is currently in. Sharks are encountered in water hazards, and snakes in the sand traps. Ninjas are encountered in all the environments, including underwater.

Documented sales

384 US copies invoiced by Atari in 1990

Ranked 37 of the 39 Atari 7800 cartridges in Atari's internal reports. These count cartridges shipped to US stores, less returns, not copies sold to players, and they end on 31 December 1990, so the game's 1991 shipments are not included.

A golf and beat-em-up hybrid that critics like for its strangeness, now with a 2024 reissue that complicates buying.

BlueSky Software made Ninja Golf for Atari Corporation in 1990, with David Dentt programming the 7800 version. A version for the Atari 8-bit computers was in production at the same time but cancelled, so the work shifted solely to the 7800. Dentt recalled that the 7800 split the screen into three distinct sections when he coded the graphics.

Each hole has you hit the ball, then fight through side-scrolling stretches of enemies to reach it, with a fire-breathing dragon guarding each green. IGN called it the second-best 7800 release in a tongue-in-cheek list, and a Den of Geek writer called it quintessentially 1980s. Atari Explorer reviewed it in its 1991 special 7800 section. It is also on Atari 50.

How it was made

David Dentt programmed the 7800 version and David Sullivan the cancelled 8-bit computer version, per AtariAge and Wikipedia.

What the press said at the time

“High-quality graphics enhance the intensity of gameplay, surrounding crazy Kung-fu action with the cool elegance of a country club.”

— Atari Explorer, September 1991

Atari Explorer was Atari Corp.'s own magazine, so its reviews are of the company's own games.

How the Atari 7800 version differs

The game was written for the 7800 and for Atari 8-bit computers at once, but the computer version was cancelled and the work went to the 7800 alone.

Worth knowing

  • From the 7800 manual. Three difficulty levels (Easy, Normal, Hard); higher levels put more enemies on the course.
  • From the 7800 manual. Pause button supported.

Before you buy

Check which copy you have. Atari and PLAION released a new official Ninja Golf cartridge in May 2024 that plays on an original 7800, so a sealed or very clean copy is more likely the reissue. The sourced check is the manual: an original reads Atari Corporation, Sunnyvale with a 1980s or 1990 date. The original is rated scarce-plus, CX 7870, Pro-Line joystick, one player.
