A real Ogre Battle game on a handheld, and the series entry most of its fans have never played.
Quest built a genuine Ogre Battle side-story for the Neo Geo Pocket Color — real-time tactical unit management, compressed but not gutted. For a series with this following, a Japan-only handheld entry is a conspicuous hole in most collections, and it is the one Japanese cartridge English-speaking strategy fans most often ask about.
Two players can put their squads against each other over a link cable. It is heavily text-driven, which is the practical obstacle, and no English translation has ever appeared — GameFan's editor was already calling it the 'no chance of ever seeing it in English' Ogre Battle in 2000.
Before you buy
It saves to the cartridge and it is a long strategy game, so a working save battery is not optional — ask for confirmation that a save survives a power cycle. IGDB carries three duplicate entries for this one game, which is a fair indication of how thinly documented it is; check you are comparing like with like when pricing.
