David Crane's first Atari game, cheap in nearly every form except one Sears picture label.

Outlaw was the first game David Crane made at Atari after joining in 1977, and he called it a 'trial by fire' for learning what the VCS could and could not do. It is a 1978 Western shooter based on the arcade game Gun Fight: one or two players shoot at targets or each other to reach 10 points within a time limit, across modes with different obstacles and bullet rules.

Creative Computing and The Space Gamer reviewed it positively on release. It has since appeared in several Atari compilations and is on Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration.

How it was made

David Crane's first Atari game, released in October 1978. Sears sold it as Gunslinger.

Worth knowing

  • Dropped from catalog, 1983. The Video Game Update reported in February 1983: "Several older games have been dropped out of the catalog. Among those are GOLF, HANGMAN, BASIC PROGRAMMING, HOME RUN, OTHELLO, OUTLAW" and Human Cannonball.
  • 1981 dealer price. Atari's confidential retailer price list for January 1 to June 1, 1981 lists Outlaw (CX2605) in its basic tier: dealers paid $14.00 against a suggested retail price of $22.95.

Before you buy

Check which label you are looking at. Atari's Outlaw, the text-label version and Sears's plain Gunslinger are all common and cheap. The Gunslinger picture-label variant is the same game but sells for far more, so it is the one to check closely: compare the label against scans, look for die-cut rounded corners and a non-glossy finish, and ask whether the label is original. A Limited Edition variant is also listed and priced separately. No fakes are documented.
