About PGA Tour Golf III

The team at Polygames make some small improvements to the latest PGA title. It has a US setting in terms of the courses and players, unlike PGA European Tour, with 8 courses in total. Control is via the standard method of setting the shot up, then pressing the button once to start a swing, a second time to set the pace, and a third time to set draw/fade. Before taking a shot the club choice, direction and intended draw/fade (spin on the ball) are selected. You can play a 72-hole tournament against 60 other PGA pros, or practice the holes at your leisure.

What it needs to play

  • Some modesSave battery (inside the cartridge) — saves to memory kept alive by a battery inside the cartridge; if that battery has died, saves are lost (MAME cartridge records).

How often it sells

  • Loose: about once a month
  • Complete: about once a week
  • Sealed: about once a year

Prices marked “few sales” rest on about one recorded sale a year, so treat them as a rough guide: the next copy could sell well above or below. Expect to wait for one to come up.

A well-regarded 16-bit golf game from EA Sports that costs next to nothing today.

PGA Tour Golf III was developed by Polygames and High Score Productions and published by EA Sports for the Genesis. It reached the PAL territories in November 1994 and North America in December 1994, as the third main game in the PGA Tour series.

GamePro's editors counted it among their ten favorite 16-bit sports games in 1996, and in a later review of PGA Tour 96 on the Super NES its reviewer measured that game against PGA Tour Golf III on the Genesis and found it did not outdo it.

What the press said at the time

“Tee off with Fuzzy Zoeller, Tom Kite or any one of eight other pros on eight of the hottest courses in America. This game features simple controls, great graphics and bells and whistles.”

— Game Players, April 1995

How the Sega Genesis version differs

Genesis reviewers singled out the new Ball Lie window, which GamePro said adds a layer of complexity to lining up shots.

An ad for the Genesis game touted eight Tournament Players Club courses, four of them new.

Before you buy

Among US carts a loose copy is one of the cheaper ones. The European cart usually costs somewhat less than the US one, loose and complete. It saves to a battery inside the cartridge, so check that a save holds; a replaced battery is a normal repair, not a sign of a fake. Sega Retro lists it as working with EA's 4 Way Play.
