About Pinball

Pinball is a pinball simulation for one or two players. You begin the game with five balls, and need to score as many points as possible by hitting the ball into the various bumpers and targets on the pinball table. The pinball table consists of three different screens, each with a different layout and level of difficulty. To advance from one screen to the next, you need to use a single ball to hit several targets and then get the ball into a white cup that appears. If you are on the second or third screen and the ball falls off the bottom, you will be back to the lower screen; if the ball falls off the bottom screen you will lose that ball. The game ends when all five balls have been lost.

Mattel's long-promised pinball cartridge, finally out in 1983, and the standing example of an overlay the game did not need.

Pinball took a long time to arrive. Electronic Games complained in late 1983 that Mattel had never gotten its long-promised pinball cartridge off the drawing board, leaving Intellivision owners with no pinball of their own. Computer Entertainer had it back on the schedule among the games Mattel redesigned for enhanced graphics after scrapping the Intellivision III, and Electronic Games listed it among the first SuperGraphics titles.

Mattel's packaging rule, according to a former INTV packaging employee quoted by collectors, was that every game had to ship with overlays even when they were not really needed, and Pinball is the example given.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 2 No. 8November 1983Graphics ★★★½ · Play-Action ★★★½

“Those who enjoy pinball simulations will find a lot to explore in this game.”

— Computer Entertainer, November 1983

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.

Worth knowing

  • From the Intellivision manual. There are three playing screens (green, red, blue); you climb between them on the same ball, and the blue screen can award an extra ball.
  • From the Intellivision manual. Leave the title screen alone and a demo mode plays the game by itself; you also get five balls each turn.

Before you buy

Mattel's copy came with two overlays, which the game itself barely uses, but they are part of a complete copy. Sealed copies sell for a large premium over loose carts, and boxed ones sit in between.
