About Pinball Jam

Pinball Jam is a Lynx conversion of two pinball tables: "Elvira and the Party Monsters" (Midway, 1989), and "Police Force" (Williams, 1989). Both feature authentic table layouts, targets, and bonuses; the conversion of Elvira and the Party Monsters also features digitized sound effects, including the voice of Cassandra Peterson (Elvira). Each table scrolls up and down during gameplay (as opposed to just "snapping" to a new area as the ball reaches it).

Atari developed and published it in 1992 at $39.99, adapting two real pinball tables — Midway’s Elvira and the Party Monsters, which greets you with a digitised "Oooh, let’s party!" as you pull the plunger, and Williams’ Police Force. Contemporary reviewers rated it good value precisely because it was two full simulations rather than one.

One caveat, and it cuts against the obvious assumption. Pinball looks like an ideal genre for a fixed, high-contrast screen, but German reviewers of the period complained that the ball vanishes into the busy table art and that the Lynx’s sluggish LCD is poorly suited to tracking something moving that fast. On an unmodded console that criticism still lands; on a modded one it largely disappears, which makes this a title the screen decision genuinely changes.
