The digitised-sprite arcade brawler, and the Lynx conversion is about as good as that idea allows.

Al Baker & Associates handled the 1992 conversion for Atari. Pit-Fighter used photographed actors, which on arcade hardware looked startling and at 160×102 looks like coloured mush. The conversion is competent; the source material does not survive the resolution.

It has one genuine distinction: contemporary press records it as the first four-megabit Lynx cartridge, a title originally promised to Dracula the Undead, which shipped at two megabits instead. On a platform where cartridges ran 128KB to 1MB, that made Pit-Fighter one of the largest games in the library.

It does support two-player ComLynx, confirmed by the period FAQ. Never re-released.

  • Arcade. Atari Games' 1990 coin-op, notable for digitised photographic fighters. EGM #40 called it a "long-lived arcade success". Those digitised sprites are why the Lynx conversion needed a 4-megabit cartridge — one of only four on the platform, and the earliest of them.

Worth knowing

  • It needed the Lynx's biggest cartridge. EGM #41 called it "one of the first 4 Meg Lynx cartridges" — and only four Lynx games ever reached 4 megabits, of which this is the earliest. The digitised fighters are what consumed it. Period claim and preserved ROM agree exactly.
