A late, fast vertical shooter that a Micromania reviewer called the best shooter made for the system, and one of the most expensive European carts.

Power Strike II is a vertically scrolling shooter developed by Compile and published by Sega, released in Europe in September 1993. It is part of the Aleste series and keeps the conventions of the original Power Strike: waves of enemies, projectiles to avoid, and a ship to power up. This time the setting is the seas and skies near Italy in the 1930s, where you play a Pothunter flying the Falcon Flyer against sky pirates.

Mean Machines Sega said it made the Master System perform beyond reasonable expectations, with tons of sprites on screen and a breakneck pace, and judged it a must-get for owners. Micromania's reviewer wrote that it was the best shooter made for the Master System. Because the European cart is encoded for PAL, it plays faster on a North American console.

How it was made

Developed by Compile, largely by the same staff as earlier Aleste games. Zod Hoshijima is credited as designer, Takayuki Hirono as programmer, Hiroshi Ryuoin as artist and Tsuyoshi Matsushima as composer.

“Power Strike //’s an entertaining shoot-’em-up romp, fun to play and very challenging. … Overall, a good game spoilt by a high difficulty factor and brain-boggling graphics.”

— Sega Master Force, October 1993

“Graphics are a little flickery and the main sprite can be hard to spot but the difficulty setting will keep you playing for ages.”

— Sega Master Force, November 1993

“A great shoot-’em-up with plenty of power and destruction as you wipe out wave after wa ve of enemy attacks. Backgrounds are full of colour and action with sprites being detailed and well presented.”

— Sega Pro, December 1993

Before you buy

The European cartridge is one of the priciest in the whole PAL group. Ask for a photo of the board and compare it with the board listed on this page. A complete copy costs a good deal more than a loose cart, and it is worth confirming the manual is included.
