Garry Kitchen's burger-assembly game for Activision, a fun oddity with a box worth having.
Pressure Cooker is an Atari 2600 game designed by Garry Kitchen and released by Activision in 1983. You are a short-order cook at a hamburger stand, assembling and packaging burgers to order without letting ingredients or finished burgers hit the floor.
Kitchen, who had already made Keystone Kapers for Activision, got the idea from watching burgers move along a conveyor belt at a Burger King. Contemporary reviews found it relatively unoriginal, while others complimented its graphics.
How it was made
Designed by Garry Kitchen, his fourth Atari 2600 game, and released by Activision in October 1983. The idea came from seeing burgers on a conveyor belt at a Burger King.
What the press said at the time
| Computer Entertainer Vol. 2 No. 8 | November 1983 | Graphics ★★★½ · Play-Action ★★½ |
“While the game is certainly challenging, we couldn't get really excited about it. PRESSURE COOKER just doesn't have enough of a spark of originality to make it stand out from the very crowded field of cute games.”
Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — stars in most years, diamonds in 1986–87 — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.

Worth knowing
- Sold as "rare" in 1986. By spring 1986 the 2600 market had moved on far enough that Computer Entertainer's mail-order list sold brand-new copies under the heading "RARE GAMES — THESE ARE YOUR SPECIAL PRICES", at $17.00 (good through 10 May 1986).
Before you buy
Low risk; Activision carts of this period are not reproduction targets. Loose copies are inexpensive. Boxed copies cost many times the loose price, so the box and manual carry most of a complete copy's value. Inspect the box corners and confirm the manual is included before paying for one.
