About Private Eye
You choose from five different cases to work, each with its own requirements. For example, the first case, "Safecracker Suite," requires you to locate the gun used in a crime and have it verified at the gun store, then locate stolen money and return it to the bank and then capture Henri Le Fiend and turn him into the police station. You have only a limited amount of time before the statute of limitations runs out and Henri Le Fiend gets away. Hindering your investigation are a number of obstacles, including potholes, falling objects, unfriendly animals, and knife-throwing thugs, to name a few. You drive around the city in your modified 1935 Model A, which can jump as high as two stories. It can also make 90 and 180 degree turns on a dime. When you make the car jump, you also launch yourself out of it, enabling you to nab suspects in upper story windows.

Bob Whitehead's detective game is a late Activision original with a patch offer for anyone who finished it.
Bob Whitehead, who also wrote Chopper Command, designed Private Eye for Activision in 1984. You track down clues and recover items stolen by a master criminal, which ultimately leads to his capture and arrest. It was made only for the 2600.
During the original release, players who completed the third case could photograph their score on the TV screen and mail the picture to Activision for a Super Sleuth patch.
How it was made
Designed by Bob Whitehead and published by Activision in 1984, exclusively for the 2600.
What the press said at the time
| Computer Entertainer Vol. 2 No. 11 | February 1984 | Graphics ★★½ · Play-Action ★★★½ |
“Under the whimsical humor lies a challenging little adventure game that requires good memory and a sense of direction. … PRIVATE EYE would be a great introduction to adventure gaming for young children, and many adults will enjoy the light-hearted fun, too.”
Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — stars in most years, diamonds in 1986–87 — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.

Worth knowing
- The Super Sleuth patch. Finishing the third case earned a Super Sleuth patch: players photographed their score on the TV screen and mailed the picture to Activision.
Before you buy
Low risk. If you want a complete copy, look for one with its period inserts: Activision's patch-offer inserts and catalogues add to a complete copy, but they varied by print run, so treat them as a bonus rather than a requirement. Atari has announced new Activision cartridges from November 2026, so confirm a listing is a 1980s cart.
