Quadrun on Wikipedia

Quadrun is a video game for the Atari 2600 developed by Steve Woita and published in 1983 by Atari, Inc. One of the four Atari Club games available exclusively via mail order, this title may have been available later in stores in very limited quantities. Only approximately 10,000 cartridges were initially made. Quadrun is the first Atari 2600 game with voice synthesis ; the only other is Open Sesame, made by Bit Corp.

An Atari Club mail-order shooter that talks, and an Atari-made rarity that is also on Atari 50.

Steve Woita developed Quadrun, and Atari published it in November 1983 as one of four Atari Club games sold by mail order. It may later have reached stores in very small numbers. About 10,000 cartridges were initially made.

It was the first 2600 game with voice synthesis: it calls out its own name. The only other 2600 game that does is Bit Corp's Open Sesame. Quadrun is also on Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration if you only want to play it.

Worth knowing

  • An Olympic contest. Atari Age said that "the top two Quadrun scorers will become Atari Club Videogame Masters finalists and battle it out for the championship at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles." The entry deadline was pushed back because the cart arrived late in club warehouses.
  • Club-only promise. The Atari Club's copy warned: "It will be at least six months before QUADRUN is sold at any store — it may never be released to the general public!"
  • Wanted in 1985. A March 1985 Electronic Games classified sought Lady Bug, Quadrun and Gravitar for the Atari VCS: "Top dollar paid."

Before you buy

Medium risk. No fakes are documented. Because Atari made it, the normal checks apply: expect an Atari label of the period and a mask-ROM board, not an EPROM. Ask for label-edge and dust-door board photos. The box and manual carry much of a complete copy's value, so check that both are present.
