Build, shoot, repair — an arcade strategy hybrid that works well head-to-head over ComLynx.

Atari developed and published the 1992 Lynx version of its own arcade game. The three-phase loop (place cannons, bombard, rebuild your walls against a timer) is turn-structured, which makes two-player linked play work without the reflex demands most ComLynx games have.

Never re-released on a Lynx collection.

How it was made

It was built in the gaps of another project. Atari Explorer's May/June 1992 interview about Batman Returns explains that after that game's September 1991 start the team was left waiting on materials from the film studio: "There was some free time early in the production cycle, but our programmers used the time to program Rampart, so it was win-win."

Programmed by Eric Ginner and Jerome Strach. An Atari Explorer interview in 1992 describes Rampart as their most recent work at the time, placing it immediately before Batman Returns in a run of five Lynx titles.

What the press said at the time

“Played at the highest level of sophistication, Rampart offers much of the momentary thrill and challenge of Tetris, along with the speculative strategy and territorial considerations underlying the Japanese game, Go. The result is profoundly addictive.”

— Atari Explorer, May/June 1992

Worth knowing

  • Three phases, and a digitised drill sergeant. Each round runs place-your-cannon, then a bombardment where "a digitized cry of 'Ready! Aim! Fire!' unleashes a devastating barrage" and you return fire on the ships, then a repair phase where Tetris-like wall sections are rotated into the breaches. Surrounding additional castles earns points and gives you somewhere to put more cannon.
  • An endgame most players never saw. Beat all the individual harbour battles and the game offers a final scenario: defending your entire island against simultaneous attack on every port at once.

Before you buy

Note the price shape: complete copies cost more than sealed ones here, which is thin sold data rather than a real inversion. Treat both as soft and buy on condition.
