A showy Sega action game with some of the best graphics of its day, and a cart priced above the middle.

Ranger X is a side-scrolling run-and-gun game developed by GAU Entertainment and published by Sega. It came out in Japan on 28 May 1993 as Ex-Ranza, in Europe in August 1993 and in North America in October 1993. Toshio Yamamoto designed it, Toshio Toyota programmed it and Yoshinobu Hiraiwa composed the music.

Electronic Gaming Monthly thought it had some of the best graphics ever seen on the Mega Drive, and other reviewers felt it broke through the console's color limits.

How it was made

Toyota said GAU wrote custom software tools to push the Mega Drive hardware, and that the team started from the question of what makes a game fun rather than copying other games.

“Ranger X is a superb shoot 'em up, together with Jungle Strike and Thunderforce IV it's one of the best.”

— MegaTech, July 1993

“R-X is a unique, well designed game filled with great play mechanics and special FX. It also has an excellent soundtrack.”

— Diehard GameFan, September 1993

“This single-player shoot-em-up has dual shooting and bike-riding action, making it one of the most unusual shooters in a while. If you don't get motion sickness, you'll like this one.”

— GamePro, September 1993

“Major league bosses and fancy graphics tricks make this look streets ahead of any other Megadrive shooter. The variety and smart ideas makes it play better than any other Megadrive shooter, too.”

— MegaTech, August 1993

Before you buy

Among US carts this is above the middle, and the risk tier is Medium, so ask for a photo of the board and compare it with the board listed on this page. The European cart usually costs more than the US one, and the Japanese cart (Ex-Ranza) usually costs much more and has a different cartridge shape. A Not for Resale copy also exists. Sega Retro lists it as using the six-button pad.
