A stripped-down hack-and-slash port that critics found weak, at a moderate price.

Rastan Saga II is Taito's hack-and-slash arcade game of 1989, ported to the Genesis by Opera House. It came out in Japan on 10 August 1990 and in North America in 1991.

Ken Horowitz of Sega-16 called the Genesis version a decent hack-and-slash that is fun enough for an afternoon or two, but lamented that it had lost the two-player mode and had poor audio next to the arcade game. Mark Bussler of Classic Game Room was harsher, calling the music painful, the visuals laughable and the level design mindless.

What the press said at the time

Sega Pro Issue 37October 199461%

“A Master System favourite converted to the Mega Drive, but with little noticeable improvement in quality. … One for hack ‘n’ slash addicts only.”

— Mega, July 1993

“• Také control of your gallant hero and guide him through a maze of dangly platforma. Reasonable graphics, but poor gameplay.”

— Sega Pro, October 1994

How the Sega Genesis version differs

Sega-16 rated the Genesis version 5 out of 10, lamenting the removal of the two-player mode and poorer audio than the arcade.

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits above the middle. The Japanese loose cart usually costs about the same as the US one, while a complete Japanese copy usually costs much less. The Japanese cartridge has a different shape that does not fit a Western console without an adapter or removing two plastic tabs in its slot.
