About Risky Woods

Unusually for Electronic Arts in the early 90s, this was a platform -shooter game with little or no adventuring or strategy elements. The game scrolls sideways, and has sections where precision jumps are required, either to clear rivers or collect bonuses. You carry a dagger to deal with the enemies, and must avoid contact with them. When killed, they leave coins to be collected - these are spent in the shop sections. Death loses you most of your coins, but they can usually be retrieved if they land on solid ground - making it better to be killed in combat than by drowning.

A competent but unremarkable fantasy platformer from EA, cheap in Europe and dearer in Japan.

Risky Woods is a fantasy platformer that Electronic Arts published on the Genesis. It came to North America in 1992, Europe on 17 December 1992 and Japan on 19 February 1993. The game began on computers; this page is about the Genesis cartridge.

GameFan previewed it in January 1993 as a game where you free ancient monks from stone, with 12 levels and 8 landscapes. A Mega Drive games guide summarized it as a reasonably challenging platform quest that looks pretty good but has better rivals in the genre.

What the press said at the time

GamePro Issue 46May 1993Graphics 4.0, Sound 4.0, Control 3.5, FunFactor 4.0

“It controls really well and there's lots to do, pick up and kill ... Overall, it's not a great game but there is some fun to be derived from it.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“Although not entirely original, Risky Woods is still more than satisfying. It's just too short!”

— GamePro, May 1993

How the Sega Genesis version differs

The Genesis version lets the player collect links to improve armor, and its Eye toll gates require repeating melodies with the controller.

Rohan holds a staff and wears a tunic or toga in the Genesis game, and the Eye-Key and coins look different from the other versions.

Amiga · Atari ST · MS-DOS

  • Amiga. Mean Machines noted that the game originally won plenty of praise on the Amiga.

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits above the middle. The European cart usually costs somewhat less than the US one, and the Japanese cart usually costs noticeably more and has a different cartridge shape. A complete US copy means the case, the cartridge and the manual.
