A rowdy motorcycle racer that critics loved, and a cart that sits below the middle on price.

Road Rash II is Electronic Arts' sequel to its motorcycle racing and fighting game, in which you race across the United States while hitting rival riders with fists and weapons. It added a split-screen two-player mode, nitrous charges on certain bikes and chains as weapons. It reached North America and Europe in December 1992 and Japan on 23 July 1993.

Mean Machines told owners of the first Road Rash that there was not much point buying it, since it was more of an update, but called it the greatest Mega Drive road racer if you did not already own that game, and singled out the two-player mode. Mega later placed it at number 19 in its list of the top Mega Drive games of all time.

“Road Rash 2 is a noteworthy improvement on an already excellent game. The new tracks, hot game play, and two-player competitive play clearly set this apart from its predecessor.”

— GamePro, January 1993

“Road Rash was one of the best-selling MD games — so have EA improved or regressed? From what I can see, they've made little change to gameplay but improved on options and playability.”

— Sega Force, February 1993

“What's more, there's also a brilliant split-screen two-player mode to liven up the proceedings. If you own Road Rash, there's not much point buying this - it's more of an update. However, if you're after the greatest Megadrive road racer, look no further.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“The game, to be fair, is quite a bit tougher than the original, with added gangs and faster graphics with the odd enhanced bit of scenery.”

— Mega Action, June 1993

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits below the middle. The European loose cart usually costs about the same as the US one, while a complete European copy usually costs less. The Japanese cart usually costs more and has a different cartridge shape. A cardboard-box edition is priced separately from the plastic-case copy, so check which one a listing is. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
