About Rock n' Bolt

Louie The constructor struts pieces to their location. The Girders are constantly moving back and forth. It is your job to lock them down, and then get back to where you started the level. There are 100 levels, and two types of levels. One is just locking down, the others you have to put them in a specific location. There are three levels of difficulty to choose from, you just get paid more the harder the level, and you have less time to complete the level. The objective of the game is to lock platforms into place according to a supplied map. There are three levels of difficulty; the second and third level have time limits.

An action-puzzle cart that survives mainly as a Telegames collectible rather than as a recommendation.

Action Graphics made Rock 'N Bolt for Activision, and in the ColecoVision library it appears as a Telegames release, one of the few titles the company published itself. Wikipedia describes it as a 1984 puzzle game that was also released for the Commodore 64, MSX and SG-1000.

We found no period review of the ColecoVision cartridge in the sources used here, so there is no contemporary verdict on how it plays.

Worth knowing

  • From the ColecoVision manual. Choose the untimed option (1) for a single man but no wages, or timed options 2 and 3 starting with three men; option 3 pays better than 2.
  • From the ColecoVision manual. Black bolts mean a girder is in the right place and red bolts mean the wrong place; flashing gold bolts give bonus money and flashing green bolts an extra man.
  • From the ColecoVision manual. The goal is to build a 100-story building, bolting down every girder per floor and returning to the hydraulic lift before time runs out in timed play.

Before you buy

Standard keypad controller. This is a Telegames-published cartridge, genuine but later than the Coleco era, and owners report a high failure rate on Telegames cartridges, so ask whether it has been tested. The ColecoVision museum catalogue calls it rare, and no loose, boxed or sealed price is tracked for it, so expect to negotiate without a price guide.
