About Rocky Super Action Boxing
Rocky Super Action Boxing is the first licensed video game based on the popular Rocky film series. The game is based on Rocky III and was designed by Coleco. In the game, the player can play as either Rocky Balboa or Clubber Lang in the game, either against the computer in a one player game, or against each other in a "Head to Head" two player mode. There is also a "Demo" mode if the player wants to watch Rocky and Clubber Lang fight. Since Rocky Super Action Boxing is one of the later ColecoVision titles released, it includes a pause feature for the game. Each boxing match consists of, according to the skill level chosen, two, five, ten, or fifteen rounds each lasting one minute each. During gameplay, the player's movement is restricted to three positions or "lanes" vertically, and from each player's side of the ring to the front of their opponent horizontally. The 4 button controller allows for (independently) offensive hits to the body or head, defensive blocking for the head and body, and ducking. Points are scored in the game by hitting the opponent's guard (1 point), or with a punch connecting with the opponent's head or body (2 points for either hit). Victory can be achieved in two ways, either by knockout, or by point count if the fight goes all the way to the end.

A Rocky III boxing game that is only worth owning with the Super Action Controllers it was designed for.
Coleco made Rocky Super Action Boxing for the ColecoVision alone, and Wikipedia calls it the first licensed Rocky video game. It is based on Rocky III, and you play either Rocky Balboa or Clubber Lang against the computer, or head to head with a second player, with a demo mode for watching the two fight.
The game was designed for Coleco's Super Action Controllers, and Electronic Games in 1984 listed Rocky as one of the games that need them. Electronic Fun's George Kopp praised it very highly as a sports simulation when played with those controllers.
What the press said at the time
| Computer Entertainer Vol. 2 No. 8 | November 1983 | Graphics ★★★★ · Play-Action ★★★★ |
| Electronic Fun with Computers & Games Vol. 2 No. 3 | January 1984 | 4 of 4 joysticks |
“The action buttons give you control which makes you feel as though you're really in the ring.”
“Coleco’s Rocky for the Super Action Controllers is a masterpiece of sports simulation.”
Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system. Electronic Fun rated games out of four joysticks.
Worth knowing
- From the ColecoVision manual. In one-player games the computer opponent learns your fighting style, so it gets tougher the better you box.
- From the ColecoVision manual. Game Option 9 is a head-to-head mode where a friend takes the second controller and plays Clubber Lang.
- From the ColecoVision manual. The Speed Roller on the Super Action Controller is not used in this game.
Before you buy
Rocky Super Action Boxing was designed for the Super Action Controllers, which came packed with Super Action Baseball, not with this game, so check that you have a working pair or you cannot enjoy it properly. The loose cartridge is cheap largely because it is usually separated from the controllers, while a boxed copy is worth several times as much for the packaging. A Bit Corp. Dina Personal Arcade console does not run this game.
