Samurai Shodown! launched in December 1998 during the monochrome Neo Geo Pocket's very short life, and it is the clearest early proof that SNK's microswitched stick could carry a real fighting game. Two players can fight over a link cable.

It never received a Color re-release — the Color line got Samurai Shodown! 2 instead, which is a different game rather than an upgrade of this one. That makes it one of only three monochrome titles with no colour equivalent, and the only one of the three anyone actively seeks.

Before you buy

Japan-only, titled Samurai Spirits! in its home market. It runs on a Color, but SNK's own documentation notes monochrome cartridges display in simulated colour on the newer machine rather than plain black and white — so the Color is arguably the better way to play it. It is the only monochrome cartridge with a sealed price on record, which says something about how few were kept.
