An unremarkable platformer that Atari has quietly kept alive across three modern collections.

Creative Software Designs developed it and Atari published it in 1991 — a straightforward run-and-jump game about rescuing a dog, originally built for the Atari 7800 and ported across.

The interesting part is its afterlife. It is one of only six Lynx titles on Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration AND it leads the Evercade Atari Lynx Collection 1 line-up. Whatever the rights situation is on the Epyx-developed classics, Atari clearly owns this one outright, and it shows.

Worth knowing

You are Louie, and the dog is Scraps. The insert names both: your "best buddy, Scraps, is dognapped by a gang of mean scrapyard rats," and the copy addresses the player directly as Louie. Six multi-level worlds, fought through with "bone crushing bottles and cans" — the thrown-junk weapon that gives the game its name.
Three secret bonus rooms, one of them a music memory game. Behind doors in the scrapyard are the Seek Room (a scavenger hunt with enemies still active), the Guess Room (five shuffled cans — pick the one with the arrow), and the Music Room, where you jump on "P" to hear a tune and must then repeat the "Clobber the Scrapyard" melody by jumping on the hoodlums' piano.
It was announced as Junkyard Dog. Atari's marketing copy changed the name between printings. An Electronic Gaming Monthly advert of April 1991 lists Atari's Lynx originals as "Barbarian Bodyguard, Warbirds, Turbo-Sub, and Junkyard Dog"; Atari Explorer runs almost the identical sentence a year later with "Scrapyard Dog". The working title is visible only by comparing the two versions of the same paragraph.
