About Sea Battle

In Sea Battle, players must successfully invade the home port of their opponent while protecting their own ports from invasion. Game play takes place in an island-dotted ocean, with one player's home port at the lower-left corner of the screen and the other player's home port at the upper-right corner. Each player has access to thirteen naval vessels representing eight different ship types.[2] The player may organize these ships into smaller fleets, with a maximum of three ships per fleet and four fleets active at one time. Single-ship fleets are permitted, while larger fleets may not have two ships of the same type in one fleet. When fleets are deployed, the first ship selected as part of the fleet becomes its flagship.

A complex two-player naval game with submarines and surface ships, good only if you have a human opponent.

Sea Battle is one of the Intellivision cartridges that requires two players, and that is the main thing a buyer should know. APh Technological Consulting developed it for Mattel in 1980, and it is described as a real-time strategy game built around ships and submarines.

Computer Entertainer's reviewer called it complex and engaging, but admitted he sold his copy because it needed two people. That is the game in a sentence: more depth than the usual early Mattel head-to-head cart, with nothing to do on your own. A solo player should look elsewhere.

Worth knowing

  • From the Intellivision manual. Each player commands 13 ships in up to four fleets, played across a strategy phase on an ocean map and a ship-to-ship combat phase.
  • From the Intellivision manual. The mine layer can lay four mine fields in a game, and mines do not reload no matter how many times the ship returns for repairs.
  • From the Intellivision manual. You win by moving your troop transport or aircraft carrier into the opponent's harbor during the strategy phase.

Before you buy

Requires two players. Mattel shipped two keypad overlays with it, and the game uses the keypad heavily, so a copy missing the overlays is incomplete. It is one of the cheapest carts in the library; the box and manual are the main premium on a complete copy.
