About Sensible Soccer: European Champions - 92/93 Edition

With the original Sensible Soccer having sold hugely, this updated version was released some months later (and then used as the basis for the later console versions). The teams are updated, with the sides present in the 92-93 European tournaments included, and the player names updated to take transfers into account. The game was tidied up and changed in a number of areas. The most significant change is the addition of red and yellow cards for discipline (2 yellow card offenses or one ‘professional foul’ (denying your opponent a clear goal-scoring opportunity) results in that player being sent off). The goalkeepers have been improved in skill, and the 1994 World Cup Qualifying tournament was added. This is the version that would be ported to various consoles, such as the SNES, Genesis, and in North America under the title "Championship Soccer '94".

Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Master System version

A Master System football game that Mean Machines held up as a benchmark, now mid-priced.

Sensible Soccer on the Master System was developed by Eurocom and published by Sony Imagesoft, released in Europe on February 11, 1994. The series began on the Amiga and Atari ST in 1992 from Sensible Software, with a zoomed-out bird's-eye view.

Mean Machines Sega called it a benchmark for all future Master System sports games, showing that they could equal their 16-bit counterparts in playability. Sega Pro also praised its playability and the way it kept different formations and playing styles.

The Sega Genesis version

A Mega Drive football game that European magazines rated very highly, and a cart worth checking carefully before you pay.

This is the Mega Drive version, published by Sony Imagesoft from Sensible Software's football series, which began on the Amiga and Atari ST in 1992 with a zoomed-out bird's-eye view. The Mega Drive cartridge came out only in Europe, on 10 December 1993.

European magazines received it very well. Mega put it first in its list of the 50 best Mega Drive games, and GamesMaster ranked it seventh in its 1996 Mega Drive top ten.

“SensI adjusts many of these elements with the overall effect created being of a fast, addictive soccer stm with crisp passing and plenty of options.”

— Mega Action, November 1993

“Nevertheless, the action is a lot of fun. Controlling the players is so smooth and easy - with player sprites themselves presented in a realistic proportion to the overall pitch size.”

— Sega Pro, December 1993

“In my opinion. Sensible Soccer is the best game, on any machine, ever. If I could only take one game to a desert island, it’d be this one.”

— Mega, December 1993

“A brilliant soccer game that unfortunately has been overshadowed by FIFA Soccer.”

— Sega Magazine, January 1994

Before you buy

Only the European cartridge exists, so that is the one to look for. It is priced high enough to be worth checking carefully; ask for a photo of the board and compare it with the board listed on this page. The cartridge saves to a battery inside it, so test that a save holds; a replaced battery is a normal repair and not a sign of a fake.

The Sega CD version

Computer and Video Games found this CD conversion little more than the cartridge with a few new sounds, so it is not an upgrade over the cartridge.

This is the Sega CD version of Sensible Soccer, released in Europe in July 1994 and in North America in September 1994 as Championship Soccer '94. Sony Imagesoft published it.

Computer and Video Games reviewed the Mega-CD disc in August 1994 and called it a repackaged version of the cartridge with a few new sound effects, adding that there was not much the programmers could add to such an excellent game. Mean Machines Sega had previewed it as a direct conversion of the Mega Drive game with digitized intro sequences and much improved sound.

“If you own a Mega-CD, and háve yet to buy a copy of Sensible Soccer, then this is the footy game for you.”

— Sega Pro, July 1994

“Sensi CD isn't really going to be of much interest to those who already own the game on cartridge - it just isn't different enough to justify the cash.”

— Sega Magazine, July 1994

“If you haven't already bought Sensi, and you own a Mega-CD, then this is the version you should be looking for.”

— Sega Magazine, August 1994

“Apart from new sound effects, Sensi CD offers nothing new. In fact, it’s worse than the cart”

— Computer + Video Games, August 1994

Before you buy

Among North American Sega CD games the US disc sits above the middle. The European disc usually costs somewhat less than the US one, both loose and complete, and it needs a European Mega-CD; a North American Sega CD plays the US disc, which carries the Championship Soccer '94 name. Loose copies sell infrequently. Check that the case matches the game.
