Atari 2600 prices, all games & how to spot a fake

Among Atari's last new 2600 games, and described as the console's only light-gun release.

David Lubar programmed Sentinel at Imagineering, and Atari Corp published it as one of its final new 2600 games, shipping in spring 1991 alongside Ikari Warriors, MotoRodeo and Xenophobe. It is described as the only light-gun game released for the 2600.

Atari re-released it for the 7800 in 1991 with improved graphics.

How it was made

Programmed by David Lubar at Imagineering and published by Atari Corp. Some references date it to 1990, when Atari announced it; period trade sources place its release in March 1991.

  • Atari 7800. The Atari 7800 version was released in Europe only, making it the final official European release for the 7800. The Video Games Critic still called it a complete dud.

Before you buy

Low risk. No fakes are documented. Because it is a light-gun game, ask whether a gun is included if you intend to play it. Atari Corp releases from 1986 onward use a universal 2600/7800 shell with no dust door and a plain gray label rather than a multi-layer silver one. That is how genuine copies look, so don't mistake it for a fake.
