Four shooting-gallery games on one cartridge, none strong enough to carry it; a curiosity with a TV tie-in.
Sharp Shot packs four moving-target games into one Mattel cartridge: throwing passes to a football receiver, shooting spaceships, sinking submarines and destroying monsters running through a maze. Video Games Player gave it a C- in 1983, saying more does not mean better, that only the maze chase was at all challenging, and that even that soon grew tiresome. The magazine noted Mattel had already put three games on Triple Action.
The library notes the game was designed for voice-activated control for a TV call-in game show, Powww.
What the press said at the time
| Computer Entertainer Vol. 1 No. 11 | February 1983 | Graphics ★★★½ · Play-Action ★★★ |
| Video Games Player Vol. 2 No. 1 | August-September 1983 | C- |
“These games are short and easy enough to appeal to the small child with a limited attention span. Continued practice should help them prepare for the tougher battles ahead with older siblings and friends. Recommended.”
“Sharp Shot has its heart in the right place, but makes the occasional mistake of confusing simplicity with simple-mindedness. Still, this should serve as an interesting primer in the manipulation of controller/keypads.”
“More does not mean better. Of the four games, only the maze chase is at all challenging. But even this contest quickly becomes tiresome.”
Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system. Video Games Player graded games like a report card, A+ down to C-.
How the Intellivision version differs
Sharp Shot was an Intellivision-only release. Consumers complained that its graphics were no different from earlier games on the rival Atari 2600, and the box ended up carrying a label saying it was meant for young children.
Worth knowing
- From the Intellivision manual. Four mini-games in one cartridge: Touchdown Passing, Space Gunner, Submarine and Maze Shoot, each a 60-second score attack.
- From the Intellivision manual. Add up your scores from all four games; the booklet says 200 points makes you an Ace Sharpshooter.
Before you buy
A modest cart: a boxed copy sells for little more than a loose one, so buy it for completeness rather than the game. Mattel's copies came with two keypad overlays, which the four games use, so check they are present.
