A fast ice hockey game that CVG still called the best on the 8-bit Master System in 1994, with a far cheaper European cart.

Slap Shot was developed by Sanritsu Denki and published by Sega, released in North America and Europe in 1990. Video Games and Computer Entertainment called it a fast and furious hockey simulator with high-speed tournament play. Teams are tiered for power, speed and balance, and a tournament runs up to three games, though it has no two-player tournament option.

In 1994, Computer and Video Games called it an excellent action-oriented game and the best ice hockey game on the 8-bit Master System, best in two-player mode.

“The verdict? If you already have a hockey simulation in your collection, | doubt you'll find anything different here. But if your hockey quota has yet to be filled, Slap Shot won't leave you skating on thin ice.”

— Video Games & Computer Entertainment, June 1990

“Both one and two-player options are available in this, and generally speaking, Slap Shot plays a very playable game of ice hockey. The graphics may not be totally awe-inspiring, and the sound's even worse, but in two-player mode the game is a great laugh. Check it out.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“Like its MD counterpart, EA Hockey, Slap Shot is easy to get into and has all the added extras like brawiing and dodgy umpiring. Don't worry if you don’t like the reál thing, this is pretty mánie.”

— Sega Pro, May 1993

Before you buy

Two releases exist: the US cart and the European cart. The US cart is priced above the middle loose. The European cart costs far less, loose and complete, so a European copy is the better value. The look-alike risk is low. Check that the manual is there if you want a complete copy.
