About Slither

Slither is similar in nature to the hit arcade game Centipede by Atari. You control your snake as it slither's around the screen. Where this game differs greatly from Centipede is that you can shoot in 4 different directions at the same time to take out the baddies trying to hunt you down. The bad snakes hunting you down will appear from various angles on the screen, often several at a time. The game was bundled with Coleco's Roller Controller and can't be played without it.

Coleco's arcade trackball game came packed with the Roller Controller, and the cartridge alone is nearly worthless without it.

Coleco released Slither in 1983 as the pack-in for its Roller Controller, a trackball that snaps onto the two standard controllers. Arcade Express described it as licensed from the arcade hit, with Nuvatec credited as developer in the library.

Computer Entertainer's review of the controller and game together noted a mode switch for Roller or Joystick play, and said the console could be set on a table with its suction cups or held in the lap. Electronic Games was harder on the controller in October 1984, saying an overzealous spin could be ignored entirely, though it conceded the controller was the only fully ColecoVision and Adam compatible trackball and that certain games require it. Victory is the other game programmed for it.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 2 No. 9December 1983Graphics ★★★★ · Play-Action ★★★★
Electronic Fun with Computers & Games Vol. 2 No. 5March 19844 of 4 joysticks

“The Roller Controller works beautifully with SLITHER, allowing for smoother and faster movement than is possible with the standard controller. SLITHER is an excellent game for everyone in the family”

— Computer Entertainer, December 1983

“You have to like Slither. There’s nothing here not to like. Coleco has captured every detail of the arcade parent and done it so well that even the toughest critic will find no fault.”

— Electronic Fun with Computers & Games, March 1984

“Somewhat of a bi-directional variation on the Centipede theme, Slither really moves and grooves under the magic ball's guidance.”

— Electronic Games, June 1983

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system. Electronic Fun rated games out of four joysticks.

How the ColecoVision version differs

The cartridge was packaged with Coleco's Roller Controller, a console with a free-rolling trackball, which was sold with Slither included.

Worth knowing

  • From the ColecoVision manual. The box lists the Roller Controller as the intended controller: spin the ball to steer, and upper action buttons fire up while lower ones fire down.
  • From the ColecoVision manual. Short snakes die in one shot, but hitting a long snake's body can split it into several snakes.
  • From the ColecoVision manual. A bonus ship is awarded at 10,000 points and again at regular large score intervals after that.

Before you buy

Slither came with the Roller Controller, so a loose cartridge is cheap largely because the cartridge is routinely separated from the controller. The controller is the expensive and fragile part: it needs the console's wall power routed through it, so test the trackball and the buttons before paying for a complete set. A Bit Corp. Dina Personal Arcade console does not run this game. Check the label to be sure the cartridge is Slither.
