An early David Crane Atari cart, a simple slot machine sim that is cheap under either name.

Slot Machine is a 1979 game written by David Crane for the Atari VCS and published by Atari, Inc. Sears sold it as Slots. Along with Star Ship and Miniature Golf, it was one of the first VCS games to be discontinued.

It is a simple game, interesting mainly as an early David Crane title from before Activision.

How it was made

Written by David Crane and released by Atari in March 1979, also sold by Sears as Slots.

What the press said at the time

“The game continues as long as you have chips left to bet, and the graphics are workman-like if unspectacular”

— Electronic Games, July 1983

Cartridge & preservation record

Program size 2 KB, measured from the preserved dump.

Catalogue number as recorded for the physical release.

Worth knowing

  • Early catalog cut. Electronic Games reported in May 1982 that this cartridge had been dropped from Atari's VCS line along with Star Ship, Space War and Miniature Golf: "The games you mentioned have, alas, been pruned from the VCS line, along with Surround and Slot Machine. … The result of this videogame gardening is the first group of "collector's item" videogames."

Before you buy

Low risk; this is an early Atari cart with no documented reproductions. Two labels are priced: the standard Atari Slot Machine cart and the Sears Slots cart. They are the same game and both inexpensive loose. Check which label the photos show, and confirm the box matches the cart if you are buying complete.
