Warren Robinett's first Atari game, a two-player maze shooter that matters mainly because Adventure came next.
Slot Racers is a two-player maze game in which cars fire missiles at each other, and the first to 25 hits wins. It was Warren Robinett's first game for Atari. It was developed under the name Traffic, drew on Combat, and came out in October 1978. Sears sold it as Maze.
Reviews were mixed. A 1981 review in Video called it the most important of the classic labyrinth games, while The Complete Guide to Electronic Games and, later, AllGame found it weaker than the tank games of the era and criticized its lack of a single-player mode. Robinett himself thought it was merely okay, and on finishing it he began the game that became Adventure.
How it was made
Designed by Warren Robinett, his first Atari game, under the working title Traffic. He wanted roving police cars in the maze but could not add them. Released in October 1978; Sears sold it as Maze.

Worth knowing
- The game before Adventure. Robinett felt Slot Racers was merely okay. As soon as it was done, he started on his next project, which became Adventure.
- 1981 dealer price. Atari's confidential retailer price list for January 1 to June 1, 1981 lists Slot Racers (CX2606) in its basic tier: dealers paid $14.00 against a suggested retail price of $22.95.
Before you buy
Low risk; every version is cheap. Three listings are priced: the standard Slot Racers cart, a Text Label cart, and the Sears version listed as Maze [Tele-Games]. They are the same game, so check which label is in the photos if you collect variants. Sealed standard copies cost far more than boxed ones, so inspect the wrap if you are paying for one.
