A little-documented Smurfs cartridge whose complete set includes a keypad overlay.
Innoventions developed Smurf Paint 'n' Play Workshop and Coleco published it in August 1984. No period review of it has been located, so there is little to say about how it plays.
What the press said at the time
| Computer Entertainer Vol. 3 No. 5 | August 1984 | Graphics ★★½ · Play-Action ★★★★ |
“The blockiness of these objects won't even be noticed by the intended audience for the cartridge—they'll be having too good a time playing with the Smurfs!”
Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.
Worth knowing
- From the ColecoVision manual. Four characters can be selected with the CHARACTER key: Smurf, Smurfette, Papa Smurf and Gargamel, who has been shrunk to Smurf size.
- From the ColecoVision manual. Up to four blank screens can be flipped through to build simple animations, like the moving cloud and falling apple in the demonstration.
- From the ColecoVision manual. Each new RECORD erases the previous recording, and all recorded material is lost when you shut off or reset the machine.
Before you buy
A keypad overlay is part of a complete copy, so check it is there; reproduction overlays exist. A standard ColecoVision controller is required. The box and manual make up most of the value over a loose cartridge, though it remains inexpensive.
