The best fighting game ever put on a handheld of its era, and the single strongest argument for owning this machine.
SNK put twenty-six characters from both companies' rosters onto a two-button handheld and made it work, which should not have been possible. The trick is the microswitched stick: SNK's own marketing called it a 'revolving joystick', and it gives you clean, repeatable quarter-circles in a way no membrane d-pad of the period managed. Special moves come out because you asked for them, not because you got lucky.
It is also more than a fighter. Match of the Millennium wraps the roster in an Olympic-style minigame mode, survival ladders and a genuinely deep single-player structure, which is why it survives as a portable game rather than as a curiosity. If someone owns exactly one cartridge for this system, it is usually this one.
It is on NEOGEO POCKET COLOR SELECTION Vol. 1 for the Nintendo Switch, which is the sane way to play it. The cartridge is now a collector's object.
Before you buy
One of the most reproduced cartridges on the platform, because it is both famous and expensive.
