About Sonic & Knuckles
Sonic & Knuckles is a side-scrolling platform game that continues the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Sonic seeks to prevent Dr. Robotnik from repairing the Death Egg and obtaining the Master Emerald, while Knuckles attempts to protect Floating Island. Players can control either character through a series of zones, collecting rings and Chaos Emeralds while defeating enemies and bosses. Knuckles can glide, climb walls, and break certain obstacles, while Sonic can use abilities granted by elemental shields.

Sonic & Knuckles is a 1994 platform game developed by Sega Technical Institute and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis. Players control Sonic the Hedgehog or Knuckles the Echidna in their quests to save Angel Island; Sonic tries to stop Doctor Robotnik from re-launching his orbital weapon, the Death Egg, while Knuckles scuffles with Robotnik's minion, EggRobo. Like previous Sonic games, players traverse side-scrolling levels at high speeds while collecting rings and defeating enemies.

The Sonic cart that locks onto others, and a steady buy that sits above the middle.
Sonic & Knuckles was made by Sega Technical Institute and published by Sega, and it came out worldwide on 18 October 1994. You play Sonic or Knuckles, with Sonic out to stop Doctor Robotnik from relaunching the Death Egg. It was built alongside Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and the two were planned as a single game until time and cartridge costs forced a split.
The cartridge carries a lock-on adapter. Attach Sonic the Hedgehog 3 to make the combined Sonic 3 & Knuckles, or Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to play Knuckles through its stages; attaching the original Sonic or other earlier Genesis games unlocks the Blue Sphere minigame. Electronic Gaming Monthly called it one of the best Genesis games around, praising the graphics, sound and gameplay and the lock-on idea.
The Genesis cart sold at least 1.24 million copies in the United States.

Before you buy
Among US carts it sits above the middle, in the upper range. The European cart usually costs about the same as the US one, loose and complete, and a Sega Platinum Collection re-release exists in Europe. The Japanese cart usually costs far more and has a different cartridge shape. A Not for Resale copy also exists. Sonic & Knuckles is the one Western cart whose shell is allowed a notch, so that tell does not apply here; for a copy at this price, ask for a clear photo of the board.
