Atari's Fantasia game, a 2600-only curiosity with real charm and a box worth keeping.
Sorcerer's Apprentice is based on a sequence from the film Fantasia. Peter Niday designed and programmed it, Robert Vieira wrote the music, and Atari released it in December 1983. It is a single-player game, classed as an early tower-defense game.
It is one of the less familiar Atari releases of 1983, and it made only the 2600.
How it was made
Designed and programmed by Peter Niday, with music by Robert Vieira. Released by Atari in December 1983, with a PAL release also in 1983.
What the press said at the time
| Electronic Fun with Computers & Games Vol. 2 No. 2 | December 1983 | 2½ joysticks |
| Computer Entertainer Vol. 2 No. 10 | January 1984 | Graphics ★★★½ · Play-Action ★★★ |
“While the graphics are lovely to look at and very evocative of the magnificent cartoon and while the classical piece plays in the background, the gameplay is dull, dull, dull.”
“The game should appeal to most youngsters under the age of ten because of its varied action and very good graphical representation of the Mickey Mouse character.”
“This is a noble effort with absolutely remarkable, if not overly elaborate, graphics. … The play-mechanic does get tiresome, but there are a quartet of difficulty levels and play variants to occupy young arcaders.”
Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — stars in most years, diamonds in 1986–87 — comparing each game only with other games for the same system. Electronic Fun rated games out of four joysticks.

Before you buy
Low risk. Loose carts are inexpensive. Boxed copies cost many times the loose price, so the box and manual carry most of a complete copy's value. Inspect box corners and the manual before paying for one. A standard Atari cart of this era is not a reproduction target.
