About Space Armada

Space Armada is a clone of the game Space Invaders. Rows of bomb dropping aliens are invading your home planet, and you need to protect it! You control a laser gun at the bottom of the screen; your goal is to earn as many points as possible by destroying the waves of attacking aliens at the top of the screen. The aliens march steadily downward, and if they reach the ground or you run out of laser guns, the game is over. When all aliens in a wave are destroyed, you move on to the next, more challenging round. From time to time, a flying saucer will pass by at the top of the screen which can be shot for bonus points.

A competent Mattel answer to Space Invaders, prettier than the arcade game but not harder.

Space Armada is a bottom-of-the-screen shooter released by Mattel Electronics in October 1981, with APh Technological Consulting as developer. Joystik in December 1982 judged the monsters to be in more attractive colors than the original Invaders, wished for a tougher challenge, and still called it Mattel's best offer for owners who want an Invaders-style cartridge.

Computer Entertainer's accessory coverage named it, with Astrosmash and Star Strike, as a game that benefits from a replacement joystick in place of the disc. If you own the disc controller, expect to spend a little time getting used to it.

What the press said at the time

JoyStik Vol. 1 No. 3December 1982Rating PG · Graphics 6 · Game Play 5 · Longevity 5

“Mattel's Space Armada is another Invaders clone. Unfortunately it's below Mattel's usual level of quality. The differences between the two games only serve to point out the superiority of the original.”

— JoyStik, December 1982

“Starfleet fans will want to add this game cart to their space wars collection. Intelli vision has put strong game board play into this eye /hand action game.”

— Vidiot, October 1982

“Uncomfortably derivative of Space Invaders, this will at least keep you off the streets for awhile.”

— Vidiot, February/March 1983

JoyStik’s capsule ratings run from one star to five.

Worth knowing

  • From the Intellivision manual. A Practice Mode plays the same screen at a slower speed, and after a game you can replay the last screen you reached to refine your strategy.
  • From the Intellivision manual. Hitting the red flying saucer gives bonus points and also repairs your most-damaged bunker, which matters in later guided-missile battles.

Before you buy

A complete Mattel copy has two keypad overlays. A Sears Tele-Games release is also listed and is a separate item in a different box, so check which one you are being offered. The cartridge is common and cheap loose.
