About Space Dungeon

Piloting a pie-shaped spacecraft, you must move from sector to sector collecting treasure while avoiding enemies and corner-mounted lasers. The more treasure you have with you the higher your bonus when you reach the goal. A "thief" roams the sectors collecting treasure at the same time, but shooting the thief causes him to drop all his treasure.

A twin-stick Taito conversion that reviewers praised as a strong 5200 conversion, and a cheap cart you will need two controllers for.

Atari's 5200 conversion of Taito's Space Dungeon shipped in the fall of 1983; Computer Entertainer's release list marked it as already out to retailers in its October 1983 issue. As in Robotron, you steer with one stick and aim with the other, and the cartridge came with a holder that snaps two 5200 controllers together for twin-stick play.

Reviews were warm. Video's Arcade Alley praised it in November 1983 as a sample of what 5200 cartridges could do, finding the graphics matched the arcade machine in color, sharpness and movement and the sound fitting the action. Video Games Player rated it B+ the same month and found the connected rooms, levels and above-average graphics and sound enough to keep a player busy, while warning that the two-stick scheme could confuse anyone not at ease with 5200 controllers. Wikipedia reports that Video said not even the questionable controllers could spoil the game, and that MicroKids called it another Supersystem standout.

How it was made

AtariAge credits Eric Knopp and Allen Merrell as programmers and Alan Murphy for graphics on the 5200 cartridge.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 2 No. 3June 1983Graphics ★★★½ · Play-Action ★★★½
Electronic Fun with Computers & Games Vol. 1 No. 10August 19833½ joysticks (out of 4)
Video Games Player Vol. 2 No. 2November 1983B+

“This is a very good game, combining elements of the fantasy/adventure game with all the action of outer-space shoot-outs.”

— Computer Entertainer, June 1983

“Space Dungeon is a must-have for fans of the fast and furious shoot-em-up. Unlike your average blast them to bits contest, Space Dungeon offers a degree of intrigue and suspense normally found only in a fantasy/adventure game.”

— Electronic Fun with Computers & Games, August 1983

“The music here is good, though not outstanding; however, the play action is barely describable.”

— Electronic Games, October 1983

“It's a wild shoot-'em-up adventure game. … Add to this the above-average graphics and sound effects, and you end up with an enjoyable space adventure.”

— Video Games Player, November 1983

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — stars in most years, diamonds in 1986–87 — comparing each game only with other games for the same system. Electronic Fun rated games out of four joysticks. Video Games Player graded games like a report card, A+ down to C-.

How the Atari 5200 version differs

The 5200 cartridge came with a dual-controller holder that snaps two controllers together for twin-stick play.

Compared with the arcade original, most objects on the 5200 are about four times the size, enemies launch spores only in eight directions, and the enemies are less aggressive.

Before you buy

Common and cheap, Silver 2 label, low risk. Check that the two-controller holder is present in a complete copy, and make sure you have two working controllers, since both sticks are used constantly. A drifting or worn stick will cripple this game more than most. Its manual calls for two 5200 controllers even for one player, one in each of jacks 1 and 2 (one steers, one fires), and the box included a Controller Holder to hold them together, so a one-controller setup can't play it and a complete copy should have the holder.
