A good-looking Coleco port of the talking arcade shooter that reviewers disagreed on, hindered by the stock controllers.

Coleco published Space Fury for the ColecoVision in March 1983 as a raster-graphics version of the vector arcade game. Electronic Fun, in July 1983, praised the alien commander's face and the music, and Electronic Games in August 1983 called the graphics superb but the result an interesting disappointment.

Computer Entertainer did not recommend it, saying it was the first game of its type for the ColecoVision but that play was seriously hampered by the controllers. Wikipedia says Video Games Player gave it a generally positive review, so opinion was split.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 2 No. 1April 1983Graphics ★★½ · Play-Action ★½
Electronic Fun with Computers & Games Vol. 1 No. 9July 19834 of 4 joysticks
JoyStik September 1983September 1983★★ (2 of 5)

“a fairly run-of-the-mill outer-space shooting game that just doesn't measure up to Coleco's previous releases … Graphics are colorful, but hardly spectacular, especially in the actual play sequences. Not recommended.”

— Computer Entertainer, April 1983

“This Asteroids-type game has all the features of the arcade game. … His mouth moves perfectly and his face and shoulders look better than they do in the arcade game.”

— Electronic Fun with Computers & Games, July 1983

“ColecoVision's home version makes for an interesting disappointment. The graphics are superb, even more spectacular in raster than the original's vector graphics”

— Electronic Games, August 1983

“it's really little more than a glossy once-over on the familiar Asteroids theme. Furthermore, the play action is too consistent to hold a player over the long haul.”

— Video Games Player, August-September 1983

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system. Electronic Fun rated games out of four joysticks. JoyStik’s capsule ratings run from one star to five.

How the ColecoVision version differs

Coleco's 1983 ColecoVision version uses raster graphics. Video Games Player praised the accuracy of the conversion but criticized the lack of the arcade game's speech synthesis, though it liked the replacement music.

Computer Entertainer called it the first game of this type for the ColecoVision, but said the controllers seriously hampered play action.

Worth knowing

  • From the ColecoVision manual. After clearing the alien scouts you can dock with one of three mother ships, each firing differently, for three times the firepower.
  • From the ColecoVision manual. The left side button thrusts, the right side button fires, and the control stick only rotates your fighter; up and down do nothing.
  • From the ColecoVision manual. A bonus fighter is awarded at 20,000 points.

Before you buy

Standard controller, but the period complaint was about its handling, so a better stick may help. The box and manual carry much of a complete copy's value.
