A busy asteroid-style shooter that rewards patience with the disc controller and the keypad.

Space Hawk is a multidirectional shooter that Mattel Electronics released for the Intellivision in 1982.

JoyStik, in December 1982, called it entertaining once you get proficient, comparing it to a high-tech Asteroids. It also warned that the many buttons and functions on the disc-and-keypad controller could turn off casual players, which is the best guide to whether you will enjoy it.

What the press said at the time

JoyStik Vol. 1 No. 3December 1982Rating R · Graphics 7 · Game Play 6 · Longevity 6
JoyStik Vol. 1 No. 4January 1983★★

“It offers entertaining graphics and sound effects, and its game mechanism allows a good player to continue blasting away for an hour or so.”

— JoyStik, December 1982

“Since this is, essentially, a prettied-up version of Asteroids, it should have been a lot prettier. Instead, weak graphics and mediocre control turn take yet another potential smash into a flawed but interesting contest. The concept of controlling a jet-pack space grunt is, of itself, fascinating enough to keep Intellivision fans satisfied.”

— Electronic Games, December 1982

“The game's many controls and elaborate scoring system unnecessarily complicate a simple game idea. What's more, the graphics are not up to Intellivision's usual high standards.”

— JoyStik, January 1983

“Intriguing action joined to very 20th Century attitude is perfect for the very essence of space games.”

— Vidiot, February/March 1983

JoyStik’s capsule ratings run from one star to five.

Worth knowing

  • From the Intellivision manual. You must hit a Space Hawk three times to destroy it and score, and amoebas cannot be shot; escape them or use Hyperspace, which costs points.
  • From the Intellivision manual. Two players can share one hunter with alternate control, teamwork on aiming and firing, or a Sabotage mode where the second player changes the first player's modes.

Before you buy

Mattel packed two keypad overlays with it, and the game uses the keypad. Sears sold a Tele-Games version in a Sears box with the title in black instead of the usual Sears blue, and that copy is priced above the Mattel one.
