The best of Spectravideo's three ColecoVision games, according to Computer Entertainer, and a solid two-laser shooter.

Spectravideo published Spectron for the ColecoVision in late 1983. Computer Entertainer called it a well-drawn space game with good play action and the best of the company's three ColecoVision-compatible games.

You control a pair of Spectron Lasers along the top and bottom edges of the screen. In solo and two-player alternating play one joystick moves both together, with a choice of parallel or diagonal movement. It uses the same backdrop of black space and colorful planets at every skill level. Spectravideo also made a computer that took ColecoVision cartridges, but the company was sold off in 1985.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 2 No. 11February 1984Graphics ★★★ · Play-Action ★

“The designers at Spectravideo have produced a very pretty, but totally predictable video game. At this stage in the development of electronic gaming, we ought to see something more original than an obvious copy of a classic game.”

— Computer Entertainer, February 1984

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.

Worth knowing

  • From the ColecoVision manual. Your blue shield protects the home base, but you cannot shoot up through it, so you must move out from under it to attack.
  • From the ColecoVision manual. Two warning towers flash when you are down to your last fighters.
  • From the ColecoVision manual. Scoring more than 20,000 points earns the top rank, the Excalibur Emblem.

Before you buy

Plays with the standard ColecoVision controller. It is a mid-priced third-party cart, with a boxed copy at roughly twice the loose price, mostly for the packaging. Spectravideo also published Frantic Freddy for the ColecoVision, so confirm the label reads Spectron. Ask for photos of the box and manual before paying a complete-in-box price.
