Parker Brothers' 1982 Spider-Man, the first Marvel video game and an easy, affordable piece of comics history.

Spider-Man is a vertically scrolling action game programmed by Laura Nikolich and released by Parker Brothers for the Atari 2600 in November 1982, with a PAL release in early 1983. It supports single-player and multiplayer play.

Its claim to fame is that it was the first video game to feature Spider-Man and the first video game based on Marvel Comics. That gives it a place on Marvel and Spider-Man collectors' shelves as well as 2600 ones.

How it was made

Programmed by Laura Nikolich and published by Parker Brothers in November 1982, with a PAL release in the first quarter of 1983.

What the press said at the time

Electronic Fun with Computers & Games Vol. 1 No. 4February 19833 joysticks

“Parker Brothers VCS incarnation of Marvel Comics' famed wall-crawling character is certainly a challenging, graphically acceptable and ultimately engrossing game, but if video game plagiarism were a crime worthy of a super-hero's time”

— Electronic Fun with Computers & Games, February 1983

Electronic Fun rated games out of four joysticks.

Worth knowing

  • Marvel's first game. Spider-Man on the 2600 was both the first video game to feature Spider-Man and the first video game based on Marvel Comics.
  • Sold as "rare" in 1986. By spring 1986 the 2600 market had moved on far enough that Computer Entertainer's mail-order list sold brand-new copies under the heading "RARE GAMES — THESE ARE YOUR SPECIAL PRICES", at $19.00 (good through 10 May 1986).

Before you buy

Low risk, with no documented reproductions. Comic collectors as well as 2600 collectors look for this one, so check box and manual condition carefully if you are paying for a complete copy. Confirm the listing is the 1982 Atari 2600 cartridge and not a later Spider-Man game for another system.
